07/22 Compass Guide Comments By Dr. Daniel Daves

22-Jul Neh. 9-10, 1 Cor. 1-2, Psalms 111-115, Proverbs 22

Neh 9:1-2 (NIV)1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads. 2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers.
This chapter of Nehemiah is completely about the people confessing the sins of their fathers and renouncing the history of rebellion that has come down the family line. These people were serious about their return to God, and they were laying it all on the table in honesty, humility, and repentance.
We face the same demand upon our lives.  No doubt, each of us come from a pretty strange family tree.  There may be some godliness up that family tree, but there's normally alot of ugliness and adamic rebellion, pride, arrogance, and desructive lifestyles up that family line.  My personal family tree has moonshine running, back room gambling, hobo, prison, fighting, and illicit relationships.  That mess needs to be cleaned up, or it will continue through my personal life and into my children.  Add the goofiness of my wife's upline, and I could be giving my children a powerful concoction of merged, sinful rebellion that will destroy them.  What do I do?
The first and foremost thing that a person and family can do is to come clean and honest with God, and with the other family members.  "We're screwed up, and we have a long list of this and that in our history.  We've got alot of sin in the family line that must be dealt with!"  This honesty puts us in position for the gift of God, repentance, to be given to an individual and family.
Next, we must drag our sin, pride, and rebellion to the cross of Jesus Christ and receive the free gift of God through the death and shed blood of Jesus on that cross of calvary - for us.  Applying the blood of Jesus to our sins will bring cleansing.  It will kill the old family line and it's entrapments, and it will raise us up into a new life, a new man, and a new relationship with God where we can be free to learn a new way of living.  We will no longer be connected to or trapped in the old life of sin, or the old family tree.  Our family tree literally changes and we become new - all old things die, and behold, all things are made new.  We join the family tree of almighty, eternal God!
We must NEVER forget the difference between kingdoms, between families, and between destinies.  Just as Nehemiah's people openly admitted that their forefathers were guilty, we must also openly admit the failures of our old family tree.  We must walk in continual repentance and look to Jesus for cleansing, restoration, and renewal.  We must ask Him and the Word of God to teach us how to live this new life in His glorious kingdom.
COMPASS GUIDE will bring us to the point where we see the NEW MAN that God has called us to be.  But that old man will attempt to drag us back from the new man calling.  Our history will attempt to define our future.  Our fears, memories, old entrapments, etc. will tell us that we could never walk in a new man, new kingdom, new destiny, new dream.  Therefore, we must FILTER so that we may FOCUS!  We must FILTER, and literally CUT OFF from our lives, memories, and daily activities - the old man, his history, and his entrapments. We are not to be subject to, nor a slave to the old man and his entrapments.
FILTER OUT the old man.  FILTER OUT the entrapments of the old life.  You are not the same person that you were before Christ.  You are a new man, created for good works IN Christ Jesus.  All old things are passed away and behold, all things are become new!  Embrace the NEW YOU with the dream of God planted inside, and reject, cast away, filter out, and stop paying any attention to - the old man which has been dealt with, killed in death through the cross, and has no more power over your life.
FILTER!  Then you will be able to FOCUS on your calling, destiny, and God's dream that He has planted in the heart of your new man.  king king king
